Merry Solstice and a Joyful New Year to you, my dear friends!
This year, January's theme is integration. Venus will help us synthesize the dissonance of the last few months in order to reconstruct our reality. Archetypally, Venus serves as a yoke. She connects heaven and earth, our minds to our bodies, self to other, and our environment to our desires. In Taurus, her nocturnal home, Venus makes these connections through ritual. In Libra, her diurnal abode, she does this by harmonizing the inner experience to the experience of the outer world and vice versa. Consider implementing daily observation combined with new/renewed ritual practices in order to bring balance to this first month of 2023.
January 1st, Venus conjoins Pluto for the last time in Capricorn. This conjunction stirs up intense power dynamics and deeply rooted fears. Obsessive thinking might percolate around relationships, love, security, or the past. However, the mood shifts quickly as Venus moves into Aquarius on January 2nd, leaving behind Pluto in Capricorn. Venus in Aquarius goes cerebral and wants to consider utilitarian and solution-oriented ways of dealing with problems. Consider saying yes to opportunities such as being of service, connecting with groups, and envisioning better systems to deal with fears that the Pluto-Venus conjunction may have dredged up. Venus and Pluto will not conjoin again until Pluto ingresses Aquarius, changing the tone of these deep, dark confrontations for the next twenty years.
On January 4th, Venus in Aquarius will make a sparkly little sextile to Jupiter in Aries. This is a favorable day for beginning your New Year's resolutions or engaging in a New Year ritual. It is also a good day to do something that could use some fairy dust. To zero in on how best to use this fortuitous boost, consider where the aspect lands in your natal chart.
The Sun in Capricorn trines Uranus in Taurus on the following day, December 5th. Welcome a breakthrough, a chance to make a change or to cultivate an insight, even if it requires you to let go of the past or your ego. The Full Moon in Cancer on Friday, January 6th, further nourishes efforts for change as it is opposite to Mercury and sextile Uranus. This is a wonderful Full Moon for planting intentions and composting old ideas. Then, Mercury conjoins the Sun in what is known as Cazimi on January 7th. Keep a pen and paper or note-taking device handy as Mercury Cazimi offers a flashes of clarity around personal challenges. See this cluster of aspects as a fertile time to work on reorganizing.
Venus trines Mars in Gemini on January 8th. This is an important aspect in the whole Mars in Gemini story that has been playing out since Mars entered the sign in late August. Here again we see Venus helping us to integrate the lessons of these frenetic transits. This time, she offers the unifying spirit of both benefic planets since a trine is of the nature of Jupiter. Mars in Gemini has diffuse and divisive qualities that can make it hard to follow a straight path towards a goal. This is especially true since Mars has been retrograde in this sign since October 2022. However, we gain purpose and a bit more forward momentum around these issues as Mars stations direct in Gemini on Thursday, January 12th.
January 14th, Venus in Aquarius squares Uranus in Taurus. Expect a breakthrough or change of course around Venusian things like relationships, women, art or beauty. It could also indicate a chance to shift your creative expression or free yourself of a debilitating attachment. On the 18th, Mercury stations direct in Capricorn and we move ahead with plans to rebuild in the Capricorn part of our charts. Mars's direct motion in a Mercury-ruled sign will somehow connect these two areas of our lives. On the same day, the Sun will conjoin Pluto in Capricorn. The Sun represents your will, your ambition, as well as fathers, kings and authority figures. Again, you might find your thoughts turning dark and deep around these topics as you prepare to move into the new energy that 2023 will bring.
The New Moon in Aquarius on January 21st will make a sextile to Jupiter, lifting our spirits as we refresh our energy levels. Carve out some time to meditate and journal on this day. Consider committing to a gentle cleanse of mind and body while the Moon is in Aquarius. There could be some tension in the air as this New Moon is sandwiched between two heavier aspects. Use this New Moon to release your attachment to the stress so that you can meet these challenges with serenity.
Venus makes a conjunction to Saturn in Aquarius on January 22nd which might ask us to deal with limits or boundaries concerning our relationship to others. It could manifest as a conflict with a partner, a sibling, a friend, or a creative project. It might manifest as a "no" regarding something we want. Remember that the key to unlock this Saturn door is not in the specifics of what you want or how your needs weren't met -- your side of things might never be heard or understood. Rather, the key is in how you react to the challenge. Scribble down the Serenity Prayer and keep it in your pocket around this time (Remember to fish it out and recite it when needed!). Venus will enter Pisces on January 26th and the Venusian vibes will become much softer and dreamier. Maybe you will discover a better flow for your desires, even if it's not the direction that you had expected to go.
Wishing you all a magical 2023!
